To Mobile or Not?

The consumerization of IT has led some companies to believe that the process of going mobile is easy. After all, when you can download a consumer app on your iPhone in 30 seconds, get GPS directions to a hotel on your Android, or watch a toddler using a tablet device, there is a tendency to think “Mobility is simple. We can do that.”

Don’t be fooled. On the front end, mobility might appear simple, but behind the scenes, developing and maintaining a comprehensive mobile strategy and solutions is anything but simple. It requires mobile-specific resources and technical expertise that most organizations do not have in house. Choosing or designing the right set of mobile solutions with the correct fields, based on the right architecture, is not a minor undertaking.

Of course, the payoff to a successful mobile strategy and solutions is well worth the effort.

When it’s done right, mobility can open new doors.

To Mobile

It all begins with the right questions.

  • What are you hoping to achieve with the first release version?
  • How does your project relate to the trends in the marketplace?
  • What is the most likely situation a user would engage with your App?

Unlike traditional client-server and web-based software development, mobile development is faced with very strict boundaries like memory, screen size, input devices, etc., short application lifecycles, and extreme usability requirements.

As a mobile application developers we are dealing with all of the variables in the development and deployment lifecycle.

To Mobile applications development

Native applications
In general the Native mobile apps provide fast performance and a high degree of reliability. They also have access to functions and features that run directly on the mobile device, such as the camera, contact list, and so forth.
However, the disadvantage of this type of apsp is that they are tied to one type of operating system, forcing the mobile developers to make duplicate versions that work on other platforms.
Web application
Generalized for multiple platforms and not installed locally no device, but made available over the Internet through a browser.
Hybrid application
Combines elements of both web and native apps:

  • using industry standard web programming languages and techniques such as HTML5 and JavaScript
  • package into a natively installable format that is distributed through the app store mechanism

Realizing the full potential of mobile requires creating a successful mobile strategy. Your business goals and audience goals need to be aligned to your current or planned IT capabilities.
